He was arrested by the Army of the Potomac on 5 Jun 1863 and sent to Washington on 9 Jun 1863. He was listed as a rebel deserter ("came within the lines") on 8 Jun 1863. He was initially held in the Old Capital Prison in Washington, DC before being transferred to Philadelphia where he was released after taking the oath of allegiance. On 19 May 1865 he was paroled at the Provost Marshall's office in Bowling Green, VA.
