          He

served throughout the Revolutionary War From 1776 - 1781 in United States. He volunteered at the start of the war along with his brothers. He went aboard the brig "Mosquito" and sailed from Hampton Roads for the West Indies. They were captured by the British warship "Ariadne" and all on board were made prisoners. He was taken to Barbados and held prisoner along with his brothers William and John until January 1778. James and his two brothers were then taken to Jamaica and released. They worked their passage to America aboard a British merchant ship bound for Philadelphia and with the help of a Scotchman named Buckannon were landed in Delaware near Wilmington about May 1778. They were issued passports by the local commander and made their way back to Virginia by the way of Baltimore. They arrived in Baltimore the night the city was illuminated on account of the news that the United States had signed a treaty with France.

He returned to Virginia, and he and one of his brothers planned to move to Kentucky but were persuaded to remain by some friends. He and his brother started raising a crop in Botetourt Count, Virginia, but orders were issued for a draft and rather than serve as a draftee he re-enlisted under Captain William Barrett and served in Colonel William Washington's regiment for the remainder of the war. He initially served as a light horseman, and then became an infantryman.
