MilitaryFrom 1776 - 1778William Dishman was a marine in Virginia's Navy during the Revolutionary War From 1776 - 1778. In 1776 he enlisted for two years service at Essex County, Virginia in Capt. Alexander Dick's Virginia Company and was initially stationed at Tappahannock as a guard. After some time, he re-enlisted for three years under the same captain and was ordered to rendezvous in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He went aboard the brig "Mosquito" under Captain John Harris on 27 Feb 1777 and sailed from Hampton Roads for the West Indies. They captured a British merchant ship and took it to Point Peter, Guadeloupe. On 4 Jun 1777 the Mosquito was captured by the British warship "Ariadne" and all on board were made prisoners. He was taken to Barbados and held prisoner along with his brothers James and John until January 1778. William and his two brothers were then taken to Jamaica and released. They worked their passage to America aboard a British merchant ship bound for Philadelphia and with the help of a Scotchman named Buckannon were landed in Delaware near Wilmington about May 1778. They were issued passports by the local commander and made their way back to Virginia by the way of Baltimore. They arrived in Baltimore the night the city was illuminated on account of the news that the United States had signed a treaty with France. He returned to Virginia and after discovering that his regiment had been sent out of state to an unknown location, was stationed in Williamsburg for the remainder of his enlistment.8,2
