Research Note

Some confusion exists in published genealogies concerning the motherhood of John McDaniel's 10 children. Sudie Rucker Wood's 1932 book, "The Rucker Family Genealogy", assumed that the 4 children named in John's will as having received their share of the estate "thirty odd years ago" were from his first wife and the remianing six children were from his second wife. An article in the Rucker Familiy Society Newsletter in 1992 attempted to correct this based upon the marriage dates of John and the birthdates of the 10 children, and assigned seven children to the first marriage and three to the second marriage, with a caveate that one son, Lindsey, could be from either mother. An obituary of John McDaniel found in "The Lynchburg Virginian" from March 1839 states that John "married daughter of Col. Rucker, had 4 sons and 4 daughters, remarried Mrs. Dawson of Tennessee and had two more children", confirming the hypothesis in the Rucker Familiy Society Newsletter. The two youngest children, Gideon and Sophia, are therefore from the second marriage to Lucy Rucker Dawson.
