  2. [S33] Assumption of this researcher: He does not appear in any records after the 1880 census. In the 1900 census his mother Mary Elizabeth Dishman is listed as having 8 living children out of 12 that were born. There are 8 siblings born before 1900 that are still alive in 1900 so the assumption is that Lewis Dishman is deceased.

    FORREST ROGERS DISHMAN

    1929-2005

Forrest Rogers Dishman was a well-known historian and local genealogist in Caroline County, Virginia. Anytime someone wanted to know anything about the county or anyone who may have lived in the county many years ago, they would be directed to Forrest. If a stranger came into Bowling Green looking for information on their family they too would be directed to Forrest. Even in the latter days of his life while suffering from emphysema and other ailments, he would invite you into his home and crank-up his computer or pull out booklets he had created to provide you with the answers you wanted.

Forrest Rogers Dishman was born March 15, 1929 in Occupacta, Essex County, Virginia and was the son of Elton Jett Fields and Allie Garnett Dishman one of nine children. He grew up on Haymount Farm in Caroline County and educated in the Caroline school system, graduating in 1945. He was married to "Cackie" Catherine Van Dornes for 47 years. They were married on 28 Feb 1953 in Alexandria, Virginia. Of this marriage they had 2 children of their own children Sharee Lynne Dishman Skinner & William Forrest Dishman. When his sister in law Joyce Dornes Spurley died young as a young lady thus leaving a younger family without a mom. Times were hard then but Forrest took in and raised his "Cackie" sister's three children Donald Kevin Spurley, Tamra Lynn Dishman Wheeler, Bryan Keith Spurley.

The Korean War was honored to have Forrest Dishman as one of their servicemen.

Forrest lived in Woodford, Virginia until 1995 when he retired and moved to Bowling Green, where he lived until his death. He worked 38 years for the Public Works Department of the city of Alexandria. After the death of his wife, Catherine November 6, 2000, he spent most of his time increasing his knowledge of his family history and the history of the area. Mr Dishman was always proud of his heritage and family.

Forrest Rogers Dishman died on January 8, 2005 at the hospital in Henrico Co, VA and is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bowling Green, Virginia.

A very special friend to lots of folks who is greatly missed by so many; I was honored to be able to spend many hours visiting and working on family genealogy with Forrest. Many I would have never discover if not generous help and knowledge. Such a neat gentleman if he didn't know the answer, you could be sure that he would know someone who did. One of my favorite memories was riding around King George County on his 75th Birthday in 2004 showing me where he visited his family in Dogue. Then telling me how he spends half a day walking to visit his girlfriend at the time Dottie Richardson. Then making sure that he got back to the boat landing just as the tide of the Rappahannock River was going out making his trip back to Caroline County a lot easier. So wouldn't have to fight the tide coming in as he was going out. Telling me the story of a tornado hitting their old farm house and killing his younger brother Andrew Leslie Dishman who was 7 years old. Forrest always said giving up wasn't an option. And that has always stuck with me thru the hardest of times.

Forrest and I were cousin thru his Gray and Dishman family lines. History and Genealogy were always Forrest great joys and passion.

In honor and remembrance of Forrest the following is a little of the Dishman Genealogy and is most likely his earlier Dishman family:

Peter Dishman born 1718 in Westmoreland County, Virginia and died in 1763 in Essex County, Virginia. Peter Dishman married Sarah Reynolds and had the follow children Samuel Dishman; John B. Dishman; Jeremiah Dishman who married Nancy Ann Miller William Dishman married Sarah Salmon; Sarah Dishman married John Beasley; Anne Dishman married Thomas Garnett Noel: and James Dishman married Jane Gunn. Connecting back to Samuel Gray that married Sarah Ann Gray, who had William Wilson Dishman who married Mary Reynolds Dishman, who had William Lewis Dishman who married Mary Elizabeth Watts who son was Allie Garnett Dishman.

They don't make them like him anymore. RIP dear friend.
