Name ChangeThe evidence indicates that John A. Dishman disappeared from Richmond VA in 1917, relocated to Charleston WV in 1918, and began using the name James William McDaniel.

The 1917 Richmond City Directory shows John Dishman living in Atlee, Virginia (just outside Richmond in Hanover County) and working as a collector for the Rountree-Cherry Corporation. This is the last known record of him.

Family legend says that John Dishman got into some sort of financial difficulty about 1916, possibly involving embezzlement of funds from his employer. The family in King George had to raise several hundred dollars, a considerable amount for a farming family at that time, and John’s brother James Samuel Dishman went to Richmond by train from Fredericksburg, VA to settle the affair. In later years, none of the older members of the family would talk about John Dishman. His mother was often heard praying at night about “poor John”.

No records of James W. McDaniel have been found prior to 1918 when he registered for the draft in Charelston WV. He married a young widow with three children, Loulie Spencer Amburgey, and had three more children with her. One of his sons, Claude W. McDaniel, recalls that his father had a brother named Sam who used to send him newspapers from Warsaw VA. This was most probably James Samuel Dishman of King George VA, John Dishman's younger brother.

Two of James McDaniel's grandchildren have an autosomal DNA match with the grandson of James Samuel Dishman that is consistent with a 2nd cousin relationship.35,36,37
