Other Dishman Lines

Other Dishman Lines

There are other Dishman family lines in America that so far cannot be connected to Samuel Duchemin (Dishman) of Westmoreland County, Virginia.  The following paragraphs provide a brief overview of the three largest lines.  If you have any information that may connect these lines to the Dishman’s of Westmoreland County, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Descendants of Keziah Dishman of Iredell County, North Carolina

A large number of Dishman’s can trace their ancestry to Keziah (Kissiah, Kiziah, Kizey) Dishman and her three sons Jefferson, Lewis, and James who were living in Iredell County, NC at the beginning of the 19th century.  Keziah Dishman first appears in the records of Iredell County in 1798 in connection with a deed for 100 acres of land.  Between 1810 and 1820 she migrated to Wayne County, Kentucky with her son Jefferson, who married Lydia Upchurch.

There are many unproven claims concerning Keziah Dishman.  One claim is that she was married to a Thomas Dishman, and that Thomas was a son of Peter Dishman and Sarah Reynolds of Westmoreland County, VA.  There are no known records to substantiate that Peter had a son named Thomas.  Another claim is that Keziah was the daughter of a Cherokee Indian chief named Doublehead.  Many of these claims originated in the Guion Miller Applications filed in the early 1900s by Cherokee descendants seeking a share of compensation from the Federal Government for the forced removal of Indians from eastern lands.

Descendants of James Edward and Churchwell Dishman of Spotsylvania County, Virginia

Another group of Dishman’s can trace their ancestry back to two brothers, James Edward Dishman (1814-1858) and Churchwell (Churchill) Dishman (b. circa 1804), who were born near Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Family oral history states that their parents died when they were very young and that they were raised by a family named Curtis or Curry.  Court records for the Superior Court of Chancery in Fredericksburg include an 1823  lawsuit brought by Ann Currie against a James M. Garnett on behalf of Churchill and James Dishman, infants (under the age of 21). In the court records, James Garnett was named as an administrator for the estate of ” _____ Dishman, deceased”. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1825 without any record of the reason. Their father may also have been named James Edward Dishman but he has not been located in any records.  Churchwell married Mary Noe in Spotsylvania County, VA in 1832.  James Edward married Mary Black in 1838.  The two brothers left the Fredericksburg area before 1840 and went west.  They separated in what is now West Virginia.  Churchwell remained in the Wayne County, West Virginia area while James Edward went to Harrison County in southern Indiana.

Descendants of James Edward and Churchwell Dishman

Dishmans of Chesterfield County, Virginia

The name Dishman appears in the records on Chesterfield County, Virginia as early as 1756 when a Frances Dishman is named as an heir in the will of her mother, Jane Andrews.  At the end of the 1700s, more Dishmans appear including Daniel, Drury, John, and Sterling Dishman.  The Dishman name appears in the census records of Chesterfield County from 1810 through 1930.  The origin of these Dishman’s is unknown, but they may descend from Daniel Duchemin, a French Huguenot who was part of the Manakin Town settlement of 1700 in Chesterfield County.

  1. My Grandfather was William “Riley” Dishman and my Father was Billy “Glen” Dishman. My Grandpa Riley’s Father was William “Billy or Bill” Dishman. My Grnadpa Riley told us that his Grandmother was an Indian, the daughter of an Indian Chief. They lived in the Catawba River area. Billy Dishman was married and had a family in that area, then he married Elvira Lambert and she was my Great Grandmother. He got sick and some of his children from the first marriage come to Ashe County and took him back to where they lived in Irdelle or Catawba County. If you have other information on William “Billy” Dishman I would appreciate it.

    1. this is the area i am from an dstill live in i also have cousins named william after old family members

  2. While indexing the 1890 Census of Union Verterans and Widows, South Elkton, Fayette , KY, I came across one William Dishman (alias William Deeds). Served from 16 Nov 1863 to 26 Mar 1866. Page 1, Sup Dist 4, Enumer Dist 63, line 10. Checking the spelling on google, and seeing your reseach efforts, I thought the name with an “alias” would be interesting.

  3. Would love to converse with descendants of KIssiah/Kiziah Dishman and her sons Jefferson, Lewis, and James. Have my own Dishman brick wall…Basil/Azel Dishman born ca 1840, prob in MO. At least one source indicates his father was born in NC. Have DNA markers on a direct male descendant of his, if that might help. Just want to link us to one of the Dishman lines !!!!

  4. Keep getting different stories about where the line goes. My father is originally from Overton County, Tennessee and I have found some information but then someone else tells me differently. For example, Kizziah Doublehead was related, Samuel Duchemin, etc.

    1. My Great Grandfather was a Grand Dishman and my Grandfather was a Tess Dishman who was from the Livingston Tn. area and I have been told that we was related to Samuel Dishman also and that we was also related to Chief Doublehead . I have been trying to figure out if the stories was true are not and piece together how we went from Samuel Duchemin to my great grandfather .

  5. My cousin said I am a decendent of Samuel, does anyone have confirmation that I am? My father was Perry Dishman and his father was John from Montecello Ky. I love Geneology but I stink at understanding it.

  6. Reading over the comments I was sad to see that Jo Anne passed away a couple of years ago. She shared a number of things with me when I was looking into the family tree on the Dishmon side. Her comment here just made things clear for me. I am able to now understand things better. Her grandfather Riley was brother to my great great grandfather Charlie Andrew Dishman. I am trying to understand if she had the 2 children before she married her husband William Dishman?? My grandfather Donald did speak of this…

    1. Jo Anne (Dishman) Poe was my mother. Yes – Bill and Elvira Dishman had the following children: Riley, Charles, Tom, Jim, Susie, Della, and Tish. (according to my notes)

  7. Is anyone familiar with a Frances Dishman/Duchemin that married a James Seaton, I. (b. 1723 – d. 1782) in Stafford Co., VA. or possibly Chesterfield Co., VA.? I’m related to the Seaton branch, but supposedly Frances died in approx. 1744 from complications of childbirth. She and James had a son, John. I’m also trying to find out if James Seaton married another woman named Frances (or if other family trees are confusing spouses), before James married Elizabeth Betty Kenner in 1749. Thanks for any info you might have. Phyllis

  9. Lana Jean, back in May, you replied to my comment here, re: Frances Dishman (Americanized from Duchemin), who died in 1744 from complications of childbirth. She was married to James Seaton II. and their son was John D. Seaton (we assume the middle initial was for Dishman). You were going to bring your family bible home. You said it went back to about 1640, but had a lot of wear and damage. Were you able to obtain the bible, and find any mention of James or other Seaton’s. You thought the surname Seaton was familiar. Thanks for any further info.

  10. I am a direct decendant of Daisy Bell Dishman and Eli (Elsa) Hayes and have traced my ancestry to Kizzie, but would love to know the truth on whether or not that we are Cherokee, which has never been conclusive.

How would you find the truth?

    Sincerely, Christopher Lowell Singleton
(Son of Sandra Kay Hayes, Daisy Bell Dishman’s grand daughter)

Using your grandparent’s names I’ve been able to connect you with the Dishman line I call the Keziah Dishman descendants out of North Carolina. I’ve sent the details to your email.
