I have a binder containing a family tree dating all the way back to Samuel. Being that from Samuel I am a 10th generation Dishman, I am surprised to hear that the family is from France. I was always told that we came from England and our name is German.

While indexing the 1890 Census of Union Verterans and Widows, South Elkton, Fayette , KY, I came across one William Dishman (alias William Deeds). Served from 16 Nov 1863 to 26 Mar 1866. Page 1, Sup Dist 4, Enumer Dist 63, line 10. Checking the spelling on google, and seeing your reseach efforts, I thought the name with an "alias" would be interesting.

I am amazed with the information you have found. Congratulations. I would love to research my family tree; however, my grandfather Clarence Dishman from Tennessee decided to change the spelling of his last name due to a family conflict of some sort which leaves me in the dark and confused. I do not know why papa changed his name once he got here to WV, but it had to be a serious situation. All I do know is he and my grandmother Venie Bilbrey came from Tennessee.

You are fortunate to know so much.

Sincerely,
Leisha Ann Dishmon
West Virginia

My Grandfather was William "Riley" Dishman and my Father was Billy "Glen" Dishman. My Grandpa Riley's Father was William "Billy or Bill" Dishman. My Grnadpa Riley told us that his Grandmother was an Indian, the daughter of an Indian Chief. They lived in the Catawba River area. Billy Dishman was married and had a family in that area, then he married Elvira Lambert and she was my Great Grandmother. He got sick and some of his children from the first marriage come to Ashe County and took him back to where they lived in Irdelle or Catawba County. If you have other information on William "Billy" Dishman I would appreciate it.
