Inclusion Criteria

Site Inclusion Criteria

The following criteria are used when determining which individuals to include on this site.  This allows the size of the site to be kept at a reasonable limit so that the quality of the information can be maintained.  Of course, there are always some exceptions, and I reserve the right to determine who to include or exclude.

  • I include ancestors and descendants of Samuel Duchemin, their spouses, and the parents of their spouses.
  • I include my paternal and maternal grandparents, and their ancestors.
  • I don’t typically include the children of female descendants (only the male lines are followed).
  • I include my direct ancestors, their siblings, their spouses, and the parents of their spouses.
  • I don’t include any information about living individuals.
  • I don’t include detailed information for people who died in the past 10 years.
  • I don’t typically include the siblings of spouses.
  • I don’t typically include Dishmans that are not descended from Samuel Duchemin in the main site. They will be found in the separate sections on each unrelated Dishman line.

    1. Yes, there are lots of references to slaves in the pre-Civil War wills (see the Colonial Documents page for a few transcripts) and also in many of the Chancery Court records from Virginia counties. I have a task on my future “to do” list to compile the names of slaves listed in the various documents I have in order to help their ancestors possibly make some connection.

  2. I am trying to prove that Elizabeth Dishman, born abt 1766, wife of Thomas Muse, is the daughter if Samuel Dishman. There are many places online where it states that she is Samuel’s daughter, but no concrete proof or primary source record. Samuel’s will does state Elizabeth is the daughter of Samuel and wife of Thomas, but I need better proof. Any ideas? thanks, Loretta

  5. My grandfather John Dishman was born in Kentucky but moved as a child. He built a life with 12 children in South Louisiana. I am interested in our family line prior to his move.

  6. Hi Keith,

I’m closer to you via our Dishman line. My great-grandmother was Julia Dishman, mother of Robert Amos Fones, grandmother to my father Randolph Fones.

I noticed that you also have some family names that appear in my mother’s line – not direct but cousin offshoots.
    – Conway
    – Catlett
    – Ironmonger [Frances, my 10th ggm]
    – Inscoe
    – Buckner
    – Gaines
    – Reynolds
    – Thornton
along with several other names that I’m still confirming

I’ve done the ancestry and family tree dna tests. I have an mtDNA test in process to flush out one of my mom’s lines (Carter – her gf line).

Would love to hear from you to work on our lines! Please feel free to visit my Lambeth tree on ancestry.com.

Curious about your Monroe line – does it tie to James Monroe? I own a spit piece of property in Colonial Beach near the Monroe monument.

    Chat later,

    Karen Fones

  7. I am the Great Great Great Granddaughter of John Triplett Dishman and Mary Harlowe McDaniel. I now know this thanks to all the work that has been put into maintaining the family history. I have always wanted to know about my family and was especially thrilled with pictures of my Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfather. Thank you so much for this ! Neely Kristen Wade , Granddaughter of William David Wade and Goldie June McDaniel, Daughter of James A. Dishman( aka James William McDaniel ) and Loulie Sarah Spencer .

  8. I am a descendant of HENRY STAPLETON, first mentioned on the 800+ plus acres Samuel Dishman acquired by recruiting (6) individuals and bringing them to America. “Westmoreland County, Court Order Book (1690-98), page 191:5 30 Oct 1695: Henry Stapleton, servant to Samll. Decemen adjudged twelve yeares of age and it is ordered he serve his master according to law.”

I am interested in any information about Henry, where he is from, etc.
    Thanks
    Ray

    1. This may help your research. Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D. wrote 2 books dealing with White Slavery in the American colonies between 1660-1720:
“Without Indentures: Index to White Slave Children in Colonial Court Records (Maryland and Virginia)”
“White Slave Children of Colonial Maryland and Virginia: Birth and Shipping Records”
In the 2nd book, a John Stapleton, age 12, appeared in the Westmoreland County, VA Court Order Bk the same day as your Henry Stapleton, 30 Oct 1695. John was assigned to John Pratt.
Between 1695 and 1704, Samuel Dishman/Duceman became master/owner of 4 indentured youth. In 1643, Virginia establish terms of servitude: if over 20 yrs of age-to serve to age 24, betw 12-20 yrs to serve 5 yrs, and if under 12 yrs to serve 7 yrs. However, this system was amended in 1655, to require the Irish to serve longer the the English and the law was retroactive. Also the adjudged ages were not always correct which resulted in longer sentences. Then the law was changed again to serve until they were 21 or even 24 yrs. And then if they ran away or shirked their duties, or a female became pregnant, their indenture time could be extended.
It’s a great time to re-read “Kidnapped” by Albert Louis Stephenson.

  10. Hi karen. Thank you for even knowing the Eastern Band Cherokees. You will not be listed anywhere………..The tribe of Eastern Band fled to the hills of North Carolina.
I was there and saw the shacks in the mountains, yes I saw it. It was astounding, I was 8 years old. I will never forget it. They were never contained, Thank God.
These tribes, will not list names or other wise. They don’t want to be encamped.
