About

About This Website:

The Dishman Family of Virginia began in 2002 as a way to share research about the Dishman family with interested family members and to learn how to create a website.  My uncle, James Dallas Dishman of Lynchburg, VA, had spent many years gathering information about our ancestors and had published a family tree chart that he distributed to libraries and historical societies. I entered the information into a free genealogical software program from the Church of Latter Day Saints called PAF (Personal Ancestral File) which had the ability to generate simple HTML files, and then uploaded the files to my ISP’s free hosting space – the Dishman Family of Virginia was born!  I began my own research to enhance and expand my uncle’s research, and eventually started using a more complete genealogical software program called The Master Genealogist to organize my family data. A user of The Master Genealogist developed a companion program called Second Site that enabled very detailed and customized websites to be generated from the genealogical database. I obtained the DishmanWeb.com domain and built a website using Microsoft Frontpage and Second Site that became the primary site for information about the Dishman family. I’ve later migrated from Frontpage to WordPress.

The original focus of this site was on my paternal ancestors, the Dishman and Grigsby families, so the majority of the material concerns them. I’ve recently started researching my maternal ancestors, the Mitchell and White families. The majority of information on these families is contained in the Mitchell Family part of this site.

About The Author:

My name is Keith Dishman and I have been researching the Dishman family history for over 20 years. I am the 6th great-grandson of Samuel Dishman (Duchemin), the progenitor of my Dishman family line in America.  I was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and spent many vacations in the Northern Neck region of Virginia where the Dishman family settled.  I have an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and work full time as an Antenna Systems engineer for a satellite communications company in Atlanta, GA.  Genealogy is a hobby that fills my limited spare time.
