Dear Brother:
My father and mother-in-law [sic stepmother] and William White [i.e., step-mother’s father] is all three dead, and father left all of his property to Sister Lucy [Lucinda] as she is the only one that is single.
You wish to know whom we married. I marred Mary MacDaniel and brother James [married] Amanda MacDaniel, two sisters, the daughters of James MacDaniel. Brother Charles married the daughter of Winzor Smith and has three children. Samuel married Emily Jones and has three children, tho his wife died the first of the year. Sister Milly married Henry King and are doing very well, Brother James has lost his wife about three years ago and he is yet single, tho has two children. I have been married six years and have only one child seven months old.

NOTE: JTD was a bit old-fashioned by using the term “mother-in-law” instead of “stepmother” which was common practice at a much earlier period when the term “stepmother” had not yet been adopted.15
